    The case for the AI

    What AssMan.AI actually does

Football Manager rewards good tactics, but it almost never tells you why a tactic works. You set up your 4-2-3-1, your striker scores ten in his first ten games, and then suddenly nothing goes in for two months. The match engine has a point of view about your shape, your roles, and your instructions, and most of the time, that point of view is hidden behind a wall of attribute numbers and post-match graphs.

AssMan.AI exists to make that point of view legible. You upload a screenshot of your tactic (the formation pitch, the role pickers, the team instructions panel) and the AI reads the same things a real assistant manager would: which roles can coexist, which instructions contradict each other, where you have cover and where you don't, and whether your mentality matches the way your front three actually behave on the pitch.

The site is in beta and free to use. There is no account required to upload and analyse a single tactic. We support FM24 and FM26 screenshots. Older versions usually work too, but role names and instruction labels have shifted enough that recent saves get cleaner output.

Why tactical clarity matters in FM

Football Manager's match engine is more honest than the in-game press conference makes it look. It doesn't reward "more pressing" or "higher tempo" the way an arcade game would. It rewards a coherent set of decisions that all point in the same direction. A high block with a Cautious mentality is a coherent setup. A high block with a Cautious mentality and a Defensive Forward who's instructed to drop into space is not. Your press has nobody to cue off, and you'll concede long balls into the channels you expected to defend.

Most "broken" tactics are two or three small contradictions stacked on top of each other.

    • ›A wing-back on Attack duty paired with a winger on Attack on the same side.
    • ›A Deep-Lying Playmaker telling teammates to play short while team instructions are set to Direct Passing.
    • ›A back four told to mark tightly while playing a high line against pace.

Individually, none of these are wrong. Together, they force the engine to pick between conflicting instructions, and the version it picks usually isn't the one you wanted.

That's the gap our analysis is built for. Instead of telling you "use Gegenpress," it looks at the tactic you've already built and asks: do these decisions support each other, or are they cancelling each other out?

    What the AI looks at

Every analysis covers four layers, in roughly this order. Each one catches a different kind of tactical mistake.

    Formation shape

The base 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1 / 3-4-3 outline isn't the whole story. What matters is the shape your players actually create when the ball is in different thirds. A 4-2-3-1 with two Inverted Wingers and a Complete Wing-Back becomes a 2-3-5 in the final third, dangerous in attack but wide-open if you lose the ball. We flag in-possession and out-of-possession shapes so you can decide whether they're deliberate.

    Role compatibility

Roles aren't just labels. A Mezzala wants the half-space; an Inside Forward wants the same half-space; a Wing-Back on Attack wants the wide channel the Inside Forward just vacated. Two of those three can play together. All three usually can't. We map the spaces each role occupies and surface conflicts before they show up in your match analyser.

    Instruction conflicts

The team-instructions panel has internal contradictions the UI doesn't warn you about. Higher Tempo with Work Ball Into Box, Counter-Press with a Standard defensive line, Hold Shape with Be More Expressive. Some are fine in context; others are why you're losing 1-0 to relegation candidates. The AI explains which to keep and which is probably the culprit.

    Mentality fit

Your team mentality is the dial that decides what "Support" actually means for every player. A Box-to-Box Midfielder on a Cautious team behaves nothing like a Box-to-Box Midfielder on Attacking. We check whether the roles you've picked match the energy of the mentality you've set.

Questions the AI tends to answer

The kinds of things you'd ask a real assistant manager. These are paraphrased from actual user chats.

Q.Why am I creating chances but not scoring?

Usually a finishing-role mismatch, or a striker who's being asked to drop too deep to convert the chances his teammates create.

Q.Why am I conceding from crosses?

Most of the time, a full-back duty that doesn't match what your wide forward is doing in transition.

Q.Why does my star player have a 6.7 average?

Role / attribute mismatch, or a tactical instruction asking him to do something his attributes don't support.

Q.Should I switch to 3 at the back?

Depends entirely on your wing-back and central-defensive attributes. We tell you whether your squad supports the switch and what you'd need to change in the transfer market if you wanted it to.

    Q.How do I beat a 4-4-2?

You probably have the answer in your existing tactic - we point out which lever to pull rather than telling you to overhaul the whole shape.

    Q.Is my pressing trigger right?

Pressing intensity and Line of Engagement work as a pair. We check whether yours are paired sensibly for the squad you're using.

The fastest way to see what the AI does is to drop a tactic in and read what comes back. Or browse the tactical library if you'd rather start with the theory.
